Exec: Mitsubishi, Hitachi Open to Nuclear Power Cooperation

Exec: Mitsubishi, Hitachi Open to Nuclear Power Cooperation

In an interview published Saturday, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries President Hideaki Omiya said a recent partnership with Hitachi may lead to further cooperation on nuclear power.

Mitsubishi Heavy IndustriesThe Japanese firms announced a joint venture last week that merges their fossil power generation businesses, with MHI owning 65 percent of the new company. The deal did not involve the Hitachicompanies' nuclear divisions, but in an interview with the Asahi Shimbun, Omiya described nuclear power as a potential area of future cooperation. He noted that the new fossil venture will encompass steam turbine technology also used at nuclear plants, and further cooperation could potentially offer the companies' nuclear customers both pressurized water reactors and boiling water reactors.

Such a partnership would further consolidate the market for reactor manufacturers. General Electric currently partners with Hitachi to produce its generation III reactors, and Areva has a partnership with Mitsubishi. Westinghouse, based in the U.S., is a subsidiary of Toshiba. http://nuclearstreet.com/nuclear_power_industry_news/b/nuclear_power_news/archive/2012/12/04/exec_3a00_-mitsubishi_2c00_-hitachi-open-to-nuclear-power-cooperation-120401.aspx
